Some countries, including Canada and the U.S., offer an option to file a provisional application which has less strict requirements for filing. For instance, an application can omit claims and can still obtain a filing date. This is not a preferred approach since a provisional must be upgraded before examination and before certain time deadlines. There are also certain risks associated with provisional applications which should be discussed with your agent.
